THE MOTHERTONGUE PROJECT - SOUTH AFRICA

THE MOTHERTONGUE PROJECT

The Mothertongue Project (South Africa) was founded in 2000 by Sara Matchett and Rehane Abrahams and formalised into a Section 21 (not for profit) Company in November 2003. It is a collective of women artists, facilitators and healing practitioners committed to healing and transformation through the employment of participatory theatre approaches that integrate arts methodologies. Mothertongue’s methodologies include Forum Theatre, Image Theatre, Physical Theatre/Movement, Storytelling, Visual Arts, Creative Writing and Expressive Arts Therapies.

Mothertongue Project’s focus is on creating enabling spaces within which women can discover and recover their own resources for self-healing. It is one of the few women only arts collectives in South Africa, and the collective believes that spaces such as those that they have created in the course of their work are important in recognising, embracing and celebrating the stories and lived experiences of women. By taking the first step and acknowledging that these stories exist, those involved begin a process of healing and recovering their/our own resources for transforming their/our situations.

Mothertongue Project is committed to offering theatre as a tool for activism and to fostering cultural exchange through integrated arts methodologies that celebrate and contribute to positively transforming the status of women in their communities. They seek to have a society where women are able to assertively engage with the national rhetoric of “gender equity” through a gendered interrogation of their experiences. Mothertongue Project envisions a society where (self) recognition, (self) honouring and (self) celebration of women is commonplace.

TUMBA LA TÁ - ARGENTINA

Tumba La Tá

A big band with a heart of drums and a body of more than twenty super-talented musicians and dancers, Tumba La Tá started out in 2002 as a group with more social than musical foundations. After a long period of investigation into Latin percussion, specifically Brazilian percussion and Afro-Uruguayan candombe, the band decided to fuse these styles. This took them to a new level and they decided to incorporate harmony into this new concept, which lead to the creation of the band as it is known today.

The band has also been involved with teaching music almost since its foundation and today there are more than 100 individuals who regularly and actively participate in the percussion and dance workshops and classes given by members of the band, transforming the group into a much bigger movement.

Tumba La Tá's shows are unique: 30 musicians and 10 dancers take over the stage with show that includes Brazilian music, jazz, reggae, funk and a potpourri of Argentine classics.

The band has presented many solo shows as well as played in numerous festivals, parties and other important events, spreading festive culture and different traditions which, after many years, are slowly being recovered. Tumba La Tá performs a show in which you can't sit down - you're going to want to dance, dance, dance!
